This image was taken during my time lying on the bank of a lake waiting for a pair of Common Goldeneyes to come close. I was surrounded by Canada Geese, all clucking and honking, and I was doing my best to tune them out as I kept my focus on the Goldeneyes forty yards out in the water. After a while of waiting for ducks with nothing to show for it, I briefly turned my attention to the geese. I never really try to shoot Canada geese, namely due to how common they are, and the fact that they aren’t particularly striking. But I learned once again that morning that it really isn’t about the subject you’re shooting, it’s how you play with lighting, angles, and composition. I have many drab, cookie-cutter portraits of these geese that I never post, but this photo struck me. I especially love seeing the horizon and the rising sun in the reflection of the bird’s eye. It gives the subject a sense of wonder, or even wisdom. It’s always my goal to paint my subjects in a unique light, and I feel this image achieves that. Let me know what you think! Happy Wednesday!
