‘Indian King’. ‘One bull, big forest’. Since working with @elephantfamily I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the comparatively sparsely numbered Asian elephants. It’s too easy to say they are the elephants with little ears, they are cousins of the African equivalent and different in many ways. For sure they do not lack personality.
They are a species under threat, significant loss of forest has brought them into contact with people on a regular basis. Whereas in many (not all) places in Africa elephants are really quite chilled, Indian elephants are unsettled by the sight of us. More likely to charge, at you or away from you, they are more on edge. Seeing this first hand has brought to life the @elephantfamily projects I’ve learnt so much about.
Reclaiming lands to recreate wilderness just isn’t going to happen so the challenge is how to coexist with these animals so that both people and animals can avoid stress, harm and conflict. –
